Coffee has two main components that may influence health: antioxidants and caffeine. Both have health and anti-aging benefits, and every week we seem learn more about their effects on the body.
Antioxidants help your body repair damaged cells caused by free radicals. I know, I know, “free radicals” is kind of a crazy term, but here’s what it means. In the body, oxygen molecules split into single atoms with unpaired electrons, which are called free radicals. Electrons like to be in pairs, so these atoms, called free radicals, scavenge the body to seek out other electrons so they can become a pair. This can cause damage to cells, proteins and DNA. Antioxidants in our diet help our bodies buffer the effects of stress, and lack of sleep, in order to maintain good health.
Coffee, America’s favorite beverage, is the biggest source of antioxidants in the American diet. I’m not knocking kale or blueberries, or kiwis, or quinoa, which are also superfoods, but more than half of the people in the U.S. drink coffee every day. We are beginning to learn in a serious way that drinking coffee could help lengthen your life, and that coffee, along with dark chocolate and wine are gaining credibility as anti-aging superfoods.
It’s not simply a matter of consuming more means living longer, it means that on a cellular level, superfoods like caffeine may have anti-inflammatory properties, counteracting age-related inflammation that could lead to cardiovascular issues. The caffeine in coffee also helps to bolster dopamine, a neurotransmitter that sends a happy reward signal to our brains. And yes, caffeine is a well-known stimulant, but not in the way an amphetamine is. Caffeine helps to block a neurotransmitter that makes us feel sleepy. When we drink coffee, the brain’s natural levels of dopamine stimulate the mind and body more effectively, making coffee more of a fatigue-inhibitor.
And it gets even better. In three large-scale, international observational studies involving 727,330 participants, researchers discovered that people who drink coffee tend to live longer than those who don’t. Last spring a study showed that four cups of coffee per day had a 64% lower risk of all-cause mortality than those who never or almost never consumed coffee. Additionally, there was a 22% lower risk of all-cause mortality for each two additional cups of coffee per day.
Science is finally catching up to what coffee growers have known for centuries — that the coffee bean is a powerhouse.
